La Malva-rosa is a barri of Poblats Marítims, the maritime district on Valencia's eastern edge. El Cabanyal-el Canyamelar lies to the south and Beteró to the south-west, both across Avinguda dels Tarongers, which carries the southern limit before it steps south at the eastern end to take in the hospital and meet the sea at Carrer de la Séquia de la Cadena.
La Carrasca, in the Algirós district, is the western neighbour along Carrer de l'Enginyer Fausto Elío. To the north the Séquia de Vera marks the Alboraia municipal boundary, with la Patacona beyond it. The eastern limit is the Passeig Marítim: the sand lies outside the barri. The Ajuntament counts 12,925 residents on 72.9 hectares. Avinguda de la Malva-rosa and Carrer de Cavite are the two inland spines.
The promenade and the street behind it
The eastern edge of the barri is a tiled promenade. Behind it, Carrer d'Isabel de Villena carries the Casa-Museu Blasco Ibáñez, the municipal sports hall, the Hospital de la Malva-rosa and Casa Carmela, the rice restaurant that dates its founding to 1922.
Mostly built between 1961 and 1980
The Ajuntament's Catastro figures count 6,854 properties in la Malva-rosa, 3,594 of them built between 1961 and 1980. The standard type is a brick block of six to eight storeys along Avinguda de la Malva-rosa and Carrer de Cavite, not the low tiled houses of el Cabanyal.
Shops on the avenue, no market hall
Everyday shopping happens along Avinguda de la Malva-rosa and Carrer de Mendizábal, where the supermarkets, banks, schools and the health centre are. There is no municipal market hall inside the barri: the nearest one is the Mercat del Cabanyal, in the barri immediately south.

Getting around
Metrovalencia tram lines 4 and 6 run along the southern edge of the barri, calling at La Cadena and at Platja Malva-rosa on Carrer d'Eugènia Viñes. From the airport, Metrovalencia line 5 runs to Marítim, where line 6 continues north along that corridor.
Inland the work is done by EMT bus: lines 19, 31, 32 and 92 call along Carrer d'Isabel de Villena and at the Centre de Salut Malva-rosa stop at the southern end, and 19, 31 and 92 serve Avinguda de la Malva-rosa. The nearest railway station is València-Cabanyal, on Rodalies lines C-5 and C-6. On foot, the Passeig Marítim runs the length of the barri.

Why is the barri called la Malva-rosa?
The name comes from a crop. Jean Félix Robillard, hired in 1848 as head gardener of the Jardí Botànic of the University of València, grew scented geraniums here and from 1860 distilled their essence for perfume. The plant, Pelargonium capitatum, is known locally as malva-rosa. The square Plaça del Botànic Robillard is named after him.
