El Carme, Valencia: what to see in the old town's north-west quarter
The north-western quarter of Valencia's walled old town. Narrow medieval lanes, two surviving city gates, a contemporary art centre in a former convent, and an officially declared acoustically saturated zone for nightlife.

El Carme is the north-western quarter of Ciutat Vella, Valencia's walled old town. Carrer dels Serrans closes it on the east, with la Seu and the cathedral on the far side. Carrer dels Cavallers runs along the south, separating it from el Mercat, and Carrer de Quart forms the south-western edge, with el Pilar beyond.
Carrer de Guillem de Castro is the western boundary, following the line of the demolished Christian wall, with el Botànic and the Extramurs district on the other side. To the north the barrio ends at the Túria riverbed park, with Carrer de la Blanqueria the last street inside it. The barrio covers 0.384 km² and held about 6,700 residents at the 2022 count.
A street plan older than the grid
The lanes are narrow and kinked, on an Islamic and medieval layout that predates the city's grid. Fragments of the 11th-century Muslim wall still stand inside buildings on Carrer de Roteros and around Plaça de l'Àngel and Plaça dels Navarros. Carrer de Dalt and Carrer de Baix are signed as living streets, where pedestrians have priority.
Museums close together
The Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània occupies the former Convent del Carme, the 13th-century Carmelite house that named the barrio. The IVAM stands on Carrer de Guillem de Castro, L'ETNO in la Beneficència, and the Casa Museu Benlliure and L'Iber a few streets away. The cathedral, La Llotja and the Mercat Central are in neighbouring barrios.
Noise is the trade-off
At its plenary of 20 December 2018 the city council declared El Carme a Zona Acústicamente Saturada, suspending new licences for bars, restaurants, discos, pubs, terraces on public land and background music systems. The bar clusters run late. Streets away from them, such as around Carrer de la Corona, are calmer.

Getting around
No metro or tram station stands inside El Carme. Àngel Guimerà, south-west of the barrio beyond Carrer de Guillem de Castro, is the nearest interchange and carries metro lines 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9, more than any other station in Spain. Lines 3 and 5 continue to the airport.
Túria, on lines 1 and 2, lies west-north-west on Avinguda de Pius XII by Nou Centre and the coach station, noticeably further out. Tram line 4 calls at Pont de Fusta, north across the Túria riverbed near the Torres de Serrans. EMT buses run along the boundary streets, chiefly Carrer de Guillem de Castro, because the inner lanes are too narrow for them. Inside the barrio, people walk.

Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània
Contemporary art centre in the former Convent del Carme at Carrer del Museu 2, the 13th-century Carmelite convent that gave the barrio its name, with its Gothic cloister and the attached Santa Creu parish church.
Torres de Serrans
City gate on Plaça dels Furs at the barrio's north-eastern corner, built between 1392 and 1398 by Pere Balaguer and used as a prison for nobles from 1586 to 1887.
Torres de Quart
The other surviving medieval gate, on Plaça de Santa Úrsula at the south-western corner, built between 1441 and 1460. Its outer face still carries the pockmarks of the French bombardment during the 1808 siege.
Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM)
Modern and contemporary art museum on Carrer de Guillem de Castro at the barrio's western edge, built around the Julio González collection.
L'ETNO, Museu Valencià d'Etnologia

Can I drive or park in El Carme, Valencia?
Plan not to. The whole of Ciutat Vella, including El Carme, is an Área de Prioridad Residencial and sits inside Valencia's low-emission zone. Vehicle access is limited to residents, garage holders and authorised vehicles, and since 1 January 2026 unauthorised entry carries a fine of 200 euros. Individual lanes such as Carrer de Dalt and Carrer de Baix are living streets where pedestrians have priority.
