El Cabanyal, Valencia: where to stay by the beach
The old fishing quarter between the port and the sand, with tiled house fronts, a working market and the nearest beach about a kilometre away. Our four apartments sit on Carrer d'Ernest Anastasio.

El Cabanyal-el Canyamelar is one of the barrios of Poblats Marítims, the maritime district on Valencia's eastern edge. It runs in a long grid parallel to the shore. El Grau and the port lie immediately south, la Malva-rosa continues to the north, and on the landward side the railway separates it from the barrio of Aiora.
From Carrer d'Ernest Anastasio it is roughly 350 metres to the Mercat del Cabanyal, about one kilometre to Platja del Cabanyal, also known as Platja de les Arenes, and about 1.8 kilometres to Platja de la Malva-rosa. The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències is around 1.9 kilometres away and the old centre about 3.7 kilometres.
Beach without the resort
The sand is close enough to walk to and far enough that the neighbourhood is not organised around it. There is a market, a parish church and a theatre here rather than a seafront strip of holiday lets. Good if you want the sea and a real address at the same time.
Tiled fronts, low streets
The grid was laid out when this was Poble Nou de la Mar, an independent municipality until 1897, and much of it survives: two and three storey houses with glazed tile fronts, protected as a historic ensemble since 1993. It rewards walking slowly.
Built for longer stays
There is a municipal market, ordinary shops and a good number of small bars and rice restaurants, so a week here works without a car. Families and people working remotely tend to settle in quickly. The Semana Santa Marinera is held in these streets and on the sand itself.

Getting around
The nearest tram stop, Francesc Cubells, is about 250 metres away and is served by Metrovalencia lines 6 and 8. Marítim, about 400 metres from the building, is the interchange where those trams meet metro lines 5 and 7. It was called Marítim-Serrería until 2022. Line 5 runs from there to the airport with no change.
Lines 4 and 6 also call at the Cabanyal stop further north, by Doctor Lluch. València-Cabanyal railway station, about 500 metres away, is served by Cercanías lines C-5 and C-6. EMT buses 19 and 32 link the neighbourhood with Estació del Nord and Plaça de l'Ajuntament. The beach is walkable.
